A fire erupted aboard a passenger-and-cargo ferry on Wednesday (Sep 9), about 2.2km offshore in the Philippine province of Palawan.

At least five people were killed in the blaze. The vessel’s manifest listed 117 passengers and 17 crew members, while the ferry had a maximum capacity of 330 people.

The Philippines has deployed coast guard, military and civilian vessels in a race to find survivors on the smouldering ferry.

As of Thursday, 43 people had been rescued, while more than 80 remained missing. The coast guard cautioned that the figures could change as search and rescue operations continued.

The disaster comes months after another ferry sank in the southern Philippines, killing at least 52 people. In 2023, 31 people died in a ferry fire along nearly the same route.
